Restoring Deleted Files


Files.com will save backups of files that are deleted, and retain such backups for the period of time you specify in your site settings.

In order to retrieve backups of deleted files, you must manually submit a Support Request. Once we receive the request, our team will quickly process the restoration. In the future, we plan to add a feature allowing administrators to access and restore these backups themselves.

To restore files that were deleted within your backup retention period, sign in to your Files.com account as a site administrator, then open the menu at the top-right by clicking your username, and select Contact support.

In the support case description, you will need to provide all of the information our team needs to complete the restoration. This includes the full path for each of the files and/or folders you would like restored; the earliest date you would like us to restore from (typically, the date the files were deleted); and whether you would like the files restored to their original locations (recommended), or into a fresh restore folder within your root folder.

Once we receive your request with all of the necessary details, our support team can restore the files for you. File restores through support are not guaranteed. While our support team will always attempt to restore deleted files, the files may not be available for restore.

We can only perform this action for files deleted within the retention period specified by your Keep deleted files setting, in accordance with our Data Retention Policy.

Files can only be restored once. Additional attempts to restore the same files will fail.

Setting Your Site's Backup Retention Period

Site administrators can set the maximum number of days your site will retain deleted files before they are permanently removed from your storage. To access the setting in the Files.com web UI, type "Keep deleted files for" in the search box at the top of any page and then click on the matching result.

You could instead use the Site API to view or change your site's days_to_retain_backups setting.

You can use the Command Line Interface (CLI) App to retrieve your current site information by using the following command.

files-cli sites get --fields days_to_retain_backups

To change the retention period to a new value, the CLI app command would look similar to this. Replace <NEW VALUE> with the number of days you wish to retain files after deleting.

files-cli sites update --days-to-retain-backups=<NEW VALUE>

Remote Servers

Data stored on Remote Servers are under the control of those storage vendors. Deleted files on Remote Servers cannot be restored by Files.com.

Some of the cloud-based storage solutions, such as Amazon S3, Backblaze, Box, Dropbox, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure Blob, Microsoft OneDrive, Microsoft Sharepoint, and Wasabi may support restoring deleted files. Please contact the owner, or vendor, of the Remote Server to find out what options they provide for restoring deleted files.
