SMB Protocol

The SMB (Server Message Block) protocol is another technology used for making remote storage show up as a local drive. Most usage of SMB involves computers running Microsoft Windows, as it serves as the basis for Microsoft's Distributed File System implementation.

The Files.com Agent can be used to connect your SMB network folders with Files.com. Run the Agent on any system that has SMB mounts to provide persistent connectivity to folders and files on those SMB mounts.

If you need to migrate large volumes of data into Files.com from an SMB network folder, we recommend using the Files.com Command Line App (CLI). The CLI App is a great option for one-time, or adhoc, data migration.

While Files.com does not support connectivity via SMB protocol, it does offer comparable functionality for Windows and Mac using the Files.com Desktop App for Windows/Mac. Our Desktop app is integrated with the Windows Explorer and MacOS Finder and provides highly tuned upload and download performance.

If you are a Microsoft Azure customer then you can use our Azure Files integration to connect Files.com to your Azure Files file shares and then use the SMB functionality of Azure Files to connect to the file share using the SMB protocol.

As a final alternative to using the SMB to connect your computer with your Files.com site, you can instead use the WebDAV protocol to connect.
